SOMIN’S SELF-CARE PHILOSOPHY: WHEN TO SAVE AND SPLURGE

20150613_140347-01

Everyone has different values when it comes to taking care of themselves. Naturally to spend, or not to spend (that is the question) depends entirely on what each person’s priorities are. I was inspired to share my self care philosophy by this.

WHAT I SPLURGE ON:

#Chiropractics Keeping up our spinal health is very important for endless reasons. For us, fashion enthusiasts, unhealthy spinal curves such as straight neck, hunch back and slouching problems are the worst enemy. Restoring healthy curves in the spine not only means you will look 100 times more gorgeous and chic in any outfit of choice but also tension headaches, migraines, neck pain, back pain and some sciatica will disappear in no time. My life’s been so much happier and rosier since I started my regular chiropractic adjustments. It’s definitely worth the investment for your physical and mental wellness.

#Laser Hair Removal I’m just too lazy to shave or wax every time hairs grow back which happens very often. On top of my laziness, I’m a terrible shaver/waxer. I always end up cutting myself here and there or at least irritating my skin too much. That’s why I have opted for pricier laser treatments to permanently get rid of unnecessary hairs. And it’s by far most convenient and no bleeding involved which is a big plus.

#Skincare Products Nothing makes you look youthful and healthy like a supple, glowing and soft skin. No foundation and concealer can hide wrinkly flaky dullness perfectly. Thanks to so many amazing skincare products out there, some of the signs of ageing such as wrinkles, dry patches and other skin issues can be preventable and even reversable. I also find a simple skincare routine very relaxing and therapeutic.

WHAT I SAVE ON:

#Eyebrows I love my full eyebrows that signal youthfulness and give my face more definition. Just plucking some stray brow hairs is enough to look fresh and neat in my opinion. Just a bit of eyebrow mascara in taupe to soften my jet black eyebrows is all I spend money on for my eyebrows.

#Hair Color I must admit hair color makes a big difference in anyone’s appearance except I have one good excuse not to go get my hair colored frequently. Aside from the fact that I’m a bit too lazy, hair dye is not healthy to our system. When I do get my hair colored, however, I’m always willing to pay several hundred bucks for good coloring results and possibly healthier ingredients in the dye.

#Nails I think clean and healthy nails can look as good as well polished nails. And I want all the attention to be directed to my makeup or outfit other than my nails. More importantly, I’m not patient enough to wait until nail polish is fully dry. Good thing I save some money in the nail department so I can spend more on other stuffs higher on my priority list.

IN LOVE WITH CAUDALIE PREMIER CRU

20160224_132154-01

As much as I’d love to collect and rotate between all the cult skincare products on the market, I don’t want to end up reluctantly putting something stale and less potent on my skin or trashing barely used products later on. That is why I decided as one of my new year’s resolutions to carefully choose one brand at a time and allow myself only to go on the market after I have used most of products I own, not if entirely. However, I love to explore and experiment with different skincare brands and products as well and I am not the most patient person.

How do I deal with this dilemma? I’ve been applying generous amount of each product without being stingy to my skin. So I can fully reap the benefits of them while using them up fast and move on to the next skincare line that I want to try out without anything that goes to waste. That being said, the RMS Beauty Oil and Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum are sitting there not even half used because they were purchased last year, I repeat, last year. So their existence is totally justified, right..? I’m giving them to my mom who can get more use out of them anyway.

20160224_131824-01

Onto the topic, I recently bought 3 products from Caudalie Paris that I had been eyeing on for a while, which are Premier Cru Eye Cream, Premier Cru The Elixir, Premier Cru The Cream. I opted for Caudalie since the brand is famous for its quality spas and three signature patents: Resveratrol to lift and firm, Viniferine to correct dark spots and brighten, and anti-oxidant rich grape-seed Polyphenols. And Premier Cru has it all! The brand’s website explains “It[Premier Cru]s formula is an exclusive blend of the 3 Caudalie patents (Resveratrol, Viniferine and Polyphenols) combined with the most effective molecules on the market for treating all the signs of ageing (wrinkles, lack of firmness, dark spots, dull complexion, dryness etc). All contained in a divine texture with an oak rose fragrance”. On a side note, the name “Premier Cru” means a wine of a superior grade, or the vineyard that produces it. Just so you know the ingredients in this line are highest quality.

I’ve been so in love with these Premier Cru collections. To start with, they smell divine. It’s very calming and therapeutic when I gently press and tap them into the skin. Don’t let the right-out-of-the-pump consistency fool you! Especially the eye cream and the cream may look thick when just pumped out though, they melt in a second as you warm them up between your fingers and absorb into the skin like a dream. Instant supple, glowy and youthful look! My otherwise dry skin becomes velvety smooth, well hydrated and radiant without feeling heavy or greasy after using them.

I have many other skincare products on my wishlist crying to be tested and loved, however, I think I can wait happily and anxiety-free until I’m completely finished with these. Who knows I might repurchase them rather than go on to try other products?

THIS ICECREAM WILL MAKE YOU HEALTHIER

20151214_121712-02

20151214_120636-01

The more you eat ice cream, the healthier you will become. Sounds too good to be true, except it actually is!

THIS ice cream is as yummy as conventional ice cream but by far healthier due to its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory properties and lack of trans fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and lower in calories, which is a big plus. I have seen many vegan “nice cream” recipes online though, there isn’t a recipe containing pine nuts that are so flavorful, nutty, creamy, and antioxidant-rich and sesame seeds that add a subtle crunchy texture to it.

The ratio of the ingredients is not fixed, so you can play with them and see how it goes. That being said, if there is one thing to note, you need to put in a lot of pine nuts for a thick consistency and a fatty flavor which resembles that of dairy ice cream. Also make sure you use frozen fruits so they won’t turn out watery and smoothie-like.

* Ingredients*

Put in a blender:

Frozen bananas(Make sure they were fully ripe before frozen)

Frozen mangoes

Frozen strawberries(Can be substituted with frozen cherries)

Pine nuts(Can be substituted with cashews)

Walnuts

Sprinkle on the ice cream mixture:

Chopped almonds(Best when roasted at 350′ until fragrant)

Chia seeds

Cacao nibs

Sesame seeds

CRUMBLY CORNBREAD SCONES

20160123_103332-01

20160123_101533-022

I love crumbly cornbread with a lot of texture to it. I have come across tons of moist and fluffy cornbread recipes on the internet, but not the crumbly dense ones with a bit of crunchiness and chewiness. Luckily, I discovered this vegan cornbread scone recipe which I felt is closest to what I want and adapted it to my liking. This adapted version turned out so well that I had to share. Crumbly, dense, cruchy, and chewy. Think it’s an impossible combination? Think again.

*INGREDIENTS*

1 1/4 cups All purpose flour

 1 cup Yellow corn flour

1/4 cup Medium ground corn meal

2 teaspoons Baking powder

1/2 teaspoon Baking soda

1/2 teaspoon Salt

3/4 cup Creamed corn

1/4 cup Cooked sweet corn kernels

1/4 cup Coconut milk

1/4 cup Water

2 tablespoons Canola oil

2 tablespoons Agave syrup

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl and add wet ingredients to form a dough. Divide into 8 equal slices on a flat surface, separate, put in the oven and bake them for about 15 minutes until golden brown.

HANDMADE JEWELRIES

Catching up with old friends is always a great joy. Even better if there are cute jewelries to play with. A dear friend of mine has recently opened up a handmade jewelry business and she brought some of her new products for me to try on last night.

Though I got really excited and wanted to keep everything because girls can’t have too many jewelries, I took a deep breath, managed to collect myself and decided to buy just a few of them. Pats on my back for my willpower!

I’m seriously thinking to learn to make jewelries. It would be amazing if could make a collection of jewelries in my original design with my own hands.

MY FAVORITE LIP BALMS

20160122_124644-01

20160122_125132-01

My lips are chronically chapped and no lipstick looks good on sad cracked lips. I have to scrub off my lips 3 times a day. Yes, you heard me right. 3 times! Naturally I tend to gravitate toward lip balms, treatments, and lipsticks with a moisturizing property that won’t emphasize my dry patches.

Sisley Confort Extreme Levres is my favorite lip treatment. Very soothing and nutritive. It is thick and a little sticky in the jar, however, will melt nicely and last long on your lips. It’s the perfect lip balm during the cold winter months. Though quite pricey, it is worth the investment.

20160122_130537-01

I also like my RMS Beauty Lip & Skin balm as it is really nourishing, organic, natural and smells good. One thing I don’t like about it is that I have to reapply it often because it does not last too long. Lip2Cheeks in Diabolique and Illusive are such gorgeous colors, highly pigmented and quite hydrating as well. Does not last long, either. Nevertheless I love them.

20160122_125500-01

Lastly, Hurraw! Grapefruit Lip Balm smells like a grapefruit candy and Moon Balm like chamomile & vanilla. They are also organic, raw, natural and moisturizing with decent lasting power, yet so much cheaper. Totally great value for money. I think I might try other flavors as well.

Dior Addict Lip Glow and Tarte LipSurgence Lip tint in glaze are quite hydrating, but obviously not as emollient as lip balms. I use them mostly during summer when my lips are not too dry.

I apply either Sisley Confort Extreme Levres or Hurraw! Moon Balm right before I go to bed since they are extra hydrating and nourishing. Others during the day.

MY FAVORITE TEAS

20160122_103322-02

20160122_102527-02

20160122_102630-02

I love drinking tea both hot and cold throughout the day. As I can’t stand the taste of plain water, I would be so dehydrated if it were not for tea. Though there are so many different tea blends, I like these subtley sweet, cinamony, licorice-y, and chocolaty teas most.

Any tea blend with cinnamon lends a subtle sweetness the moment you sip it. Also when a licorice tea washes over the tongue, its sweet flavor fills the entire mouth and vanishes without leaving any unpleasant aftertaste, which is very enjoyable. And chocolate teas make a nice cup of hot chocolate with almond milk and honey.20160122_110253-01

As cinnamony and chocolaty teas taste best when hot, when I want to drink something cold, I would go for Chamomile&Lavender from Harney&Sons Fine Teas(Aren’t their tin packagings so pretty? They are worth collecting in every color) or Peppermint&Licorice from Pukka. They taste great either hot or cold.

MY FAVORITE TEAS:

1. Chocolate Mint from Harney&Sons

2. Hot Cinnamon Sunset from Harney&Sons

3. Yellow&Blue from Harney&Sons

4. English Breakfast from Harney&Sons

5. Chocolate Cinnamon from Rishi

6. Peppermint&Licorice from Pukka

7. Cinnamon Apple Spice from Celestial
