Chicago is looking to add a leadoff hitter and a reliever before the July 31 trade deadline, according to a report from 670 The Score.
Ben Zobrist, who typically occupied the top spot in the Cubs’ lineup in previous seasons, has been on the restricted list since early May.
“We have to become a little bit more offensive in the right moments,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “I am thinking we would be looking at that area. If we could just add one more pro bat.
“We are missing Zobrist. That is a perfect guy. He is not here, so we miss that. You could always rely on him for that pro at-bat leading off in front of the other guys. Adding something like that could be very advantageous.”
The Cubs entered play Monday in first place of the National League Central with a 50-43 record. They hold a 2 1/2 game lead over the Brewers.
Chicago is considering all of its options, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told reporters earlier this month.
“If you go on a tear and you find yourselves with a four-or five-game lead, that puts you in a really aggressive posture as buyers,” Epstein said, via MLB.com. “It doesn’t work this way, but in your mind, you want to try to finish off the division if you can. (But) if you have two or three weeks of poor play, given where the division is, you might find yourself in fourth place and looking up four or five games at somebody. And then you have to be realistic about where you are.
“It’s not by decree from anybody, especially from me. It’s just by the nature of the standings that these next few weeks are obviously really important, for sure. Every game.”
Chicago is one of several teams interested in Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta, according to an earlier report from The Athletic.
